From the Course - January 2012
Forrest Goodling Takes Over at The Mountain
Former GMGC Superintendent Scott Coogan has moved on to “greener fairways” at Carson Hot Springs Golf Course. GMGC General Manager Kevin D. Coombs, PGA and I have agreed upon myself becoming a consulting Superintendent here at The Mountain. My name is Forrest Goodling.
I have been the Superintendent at a variety of courses from Gearhart Golf links to Portland Golf Club. I have been fortunate enough to have started my career with my father at Broadmoor Golf Course in Portland as a young man, moving on to the coast at Salishan, and then to Oregon State University in the Turfgrass/Landscape and Horticulture School of Agronomy. I’ve worked at Seattle Golf Club and a few other Northwest courses. I’ve been a Golf Course Superintendent for 26 years, my brother is a Superintendent, my father as mentioned was a Superintendent and my nephew is an Assistant Superintendent at Camas Meadows (Yes we will compete for the best greens title).
Although there always will be new chemistry, new technology and new science to continue to learn about, this past experience, has given me a broad background in golf maintenance to draw from.
Briefly about myself, I have two sons and a daughter; the boys are in school one at Lane Community College the other at U of Oregon, my daughter graduated from Oregon and is working in Beaverton, my wife works in Portland. I like to play golf, hunt and ride horses. We use our horses to deer and Elk hunt in the Eagle cap Wilderness in Northeastern Oregon.
This first month I have been learning the ropes, meeting the Lance and the crew, trying to understand the processes in place that work well, and experiment on a few new ones here at Green Mountain. Any time a new Superintendent is brought on to a golf course, he brings a new set of eyes. Scott did a good job of maintaining the course and it’s my intent to continue in that course of maintenance. Yet as mentioned, I bring a new set of eyes and maybe a few different programs of maintenance.
I look forward to meeting and seeing you on the course. Green Mountain Golf Course has a sound infrastructure and I look to build on that.
Our first priority will continue to be the greens surfaces. We’ll be exploring a few different avenues of maintenance within the resources available. I’m looking forward to working with Kevin and the existing maintenance crew at Green Mountain.
