On July 23rd, 2000 all 18-holes opened for the first time. Prior to that nine-hole routings had been in play since Thanksgiving 1999 and a 13-hole routing was used from mid-May 2000 until the Grand Opening. The great Los Angeles Times sports columnist Jim Murray once wrote about shooting the course record at Mountaingate Country Club, located high above the Sepulveda Pass in Los Angeles. But Mr. Murray was a terrible golfer. He was able to hold the course record at Mountaingate Country Club because he was one of the first people to play the course. "I have always remembered that article," tells GMGC General Manager Kevin D. Coombs, PGA. "So on our first day of play I organized an event that sent the worst players out first so that they would hold the course record, even if it was for only a minute. The first person shot 135. Each course record holder received a plaque commemerating their accomplishment at dinner after everyone was off the course. That was one of the most fun events I have ever run." All the course records are listed on plaques in the GMGC Golf Shop. "Beat the Course Records" is the theme of The Mountain's 10th Anniversary Party. Everyone who visits (customers may only receive credit for one visit per day) over the weekend, will receive two entries for our Pebble Beach drawing and one raffle ticket to place in jars for specific prizes. Those golfers playing 18-holes will receive an additional raffle ticket for each of the course records they beat. Course records have been established by gentlemen from the Summit (Green) and Foothill (Silver) tees and ladies' have established records from the Valley (Yellow) and Foothill (Silver) tees. Customers participating in "Beat the Course Records" must have their name appear on the GMGC tee sheet and provide a valid e-mail address before being awarded a prize. To receive additional raffle tickets must receive a staff initialed scorecard before playing from the first tee and must return that scorecard to a GMGC staff member at the conclusion of play. The scorecard must have the participant's full name, record the participant's hole-by-hole score and be signed by the participant and at least one other playing partner. There is no limit to the number of 18-hole rounds any one participant may play over the weekend. Participants must neatly print their name and sign their name on each raffle tickets before being placed in the jar corresponding to the selected prize. Tickets will be drawn on Wednesday July 28 at 1 pm. Winners will be notified by e-mail only! Winners must claim their prize by Wednesday August 4, 2010 before the Golf Shop closes. An unclaimed prize drawing will occur on Friday August 6, 2010 at 4 pm. Employees, their immediate families, and those associated with the golf industry are not eligible to participate.
